Generative AI

Generative AI has the potential to change just about everything. We have all heard of ChatGPT and Bard, but there are others coming including Chatsonic, Jasper and LaMDA which are all powered by large language models trained on massive datasets of text and code. These tools are further empowered by connecting with technology solutions such as Amazon CodeWhisperer, GitHub Copilot, Wolfram Alpha and Hugging Face Transformers just to name a few.

What Technology Leaders are Saying

Bill Gates, the founder of Microsoft recently stated the advent of Generative AI is as fundamentally profound as the creation of the personal computer, the internet, and the mobile phone. “Businesses will distinguish themselves by how well they use it.”

Sundar Pichai, the CEO of Alphabet (Google), says the revolution is coming faster than you know and has the power to change every process in every company. Generative AI “is the most profound technology” Google is developing.

Tim Cook, the CEO of Apple said “We see enormous potential in this space to affect virtually everything we do… It will affect every product and every service that we have.”

What’s Different…

One of the problems with Google Search and Bing today, is they are all wrapped around an economic model of selling you something rather than answering your question. Generative AI is different because it is not trying to sell you anything, it is just trying to assist you in your tasks and answer your questions.

As Generative AI advances, some jobs will start to decline but new jobs will be created. More importantly, a vast number of existing jobs will have their definitions changed, not go away, but changed because they will now be assisted by Generative AI. Not replaced, but assisted.

For example, “prompt engineering” is a field that never existed before. Today prompt engineers create prompts and refine Generative AI models to generate desirable responses. Think about how that can be applied in your business.

For existing business processes, you really need to look at each step of the process and think about how it could be done differently. The following examples are only scratching the surface:

  • For a customer service representative, Generative AI can deal directly with the customer, or it can “assist” the representative by prioritizing work, ensuring consistency and completeness, suggesting responses and solutions ranging from verbal responses to rescheduling orders or shipping routes for customer orders.
  • For finance personnel, it can analyze a batch of data and highlight areas requiring further investigation and/or prompt action.
  • For software developers, it can debug and/or generate code.
